Newcastle United’s European dreams came to a shuddering halt with a 2-1 defeat to AC Milan in the Champions League, and the injury issues are continuing to pile up.

Eddie Howe revealed in his post-match press conference after the defeat to the Italian giants that Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier were withdrawn with problems to potentially add to the Magpies’ lengthy injury list.

Speaking after the defeat, Howe said: “I had to make two changes I didn’t really want to make [Gordon and Trippier] due to injury.”

When asked to elaborate, the Newcastle manager revealed that Trippier picked up something in the first 45 minutes that impacted his performance.

Howe said: “I think he picked up something in the first half, I don’t quite know what it is at this moment in time.

“He wanted to carry on at half time, but then he signalled that he couldn’t.”

And at the same time as Trippier was withdrawn, Howe was forced to take Gordon off as well with a hamstring issue.

Howe said: “He [Gordon] said he had an awareness of his hamstring. I am not sure if it’s an injury because he could still sort of play, but he couldn’t play to the level that he’s played for a long time.”

Any absence for Trippier or Gordon would be a huge blow to the Magpies.

They have both been excellent this season and are in with a shout of being the Toon’s best players this term.

Their withdrawals also impacted the Magpies tonight as both came off with the hosts leading 1-0.

From there, the Magpies collapsed to a 2-1 defeat that saw them crash out of Europe, finishing bottom of Group F in the Champions League.

Next up for Newcastle is Fulham at St James’ Park. Trippier was already suspended for this match, but they could do with Gordon being fit as they look to end a run of three consecutive defeats.
