Earthquake near Malibu felt in the Victor Valley

An earthquake centered west of Malibu was felt by Victor Valley residents Friday afternoon.
The magnitude 4.6 earthquake was reported around 1:45 p.m., near Leo Carrillo State Park, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter was located about a mile inland from the Pacific Ocean shoreline in the Santa Monica Mountains.
It was also about 35 miles west of downtown Los Angeles and roughly 80 miles southwest of the Victor Valley.
San Bernardino County officials took to social media to ask if anyone felt the earthquake, adding that residents can “learn how to stay safe before, during and after an earthquake” by visiting http://prepare.sbcounty.gov.
A magnitude 4.6 earthquake that struck on Friday west of Malibu was felt by residents in the Victor Valley.
While many High Desert residents said they didn’t feel the earthquake, some took to social media to share their quake experience. Some described it as a swaying motion they felt while lying in bed or sitting on a chair or sofa.
“I was in our dining room when I felt my chair and table begin moving,” Victorville resident Connie Olsen told the Daily Press. “I looked up and saw the chain on the ceiling fan barely swinging — that’s when I knew it was an earthquake.”
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to buildings.
High Desert residents described the earthquake, which struck on Jan. 24 near the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults, as a mild jolt followed seconds later by a stronger one. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the preliminary 4.4 magnitude earthquake at 7:43 p.m. in San Bernardino near Interstate 215 and Fifth Street.
The 4.2 magnitude “Lytle Creek Earthquake” struck at 10:55 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, northwest of Lytle Creek, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
