The Philadelphia Eagles find themselves involved in a Derrick Henry trade rumor. But could this one be different?
Could the Philadelphia Eagles be on the cusp of something huge?
Per reports early Saturday morning from former NFL defensive end and CBS Sports host Akbar Gbajabiamila, Tennessee Titans star running back Derrick Henry is reportedly “headed” to the Eagles via trade. Gbajabiamila is reporting this as fact, though the move has not been announced anywhere else.
Rumors and potential trades get floated around every offseason before eventually proving to be anything but true. But this one feels a bit different.
Henry and Gbajabiamila share the same agency, CAA Sports. Additionally, Gbajabiamila, being a former player and current CBS host, could potentially have access to sources that other insiders don’t.
He also tweeted out the news at 2:39 a.m. ET on Saturday. For a guy not known to break news on big-time NFL moves, what does he have to gain from tweeting that out while everyone is asleep if there wasn’t some truth behind it?
There’s certainly a lot to digest here. But the Titans trading Henry has been a legitimate rumor that’s swirled all offseason, as the star ball-carrier is set to enter the final year of his contract before entering unrestricted free agency in 2024. Still an incredibly talented player with high value that’s coming off the second-most rushing yards in the league (1,538) this past season, the Titans could prove to be wise by trading him away before it’s too late.
A move like this would place the Eagles in the NFC’s driver seat once again. Putting Henry in the same backfield as quarterback Jalen Hurts would be a scary sight, though it wouldn’t come without some financial maneuvering from Philly general manager Howie Roseman.
Per Spotrac, Henry currently has the second-highest cap hit among running backs at $16.37 million. The Titans would free themselves of this via a trade, while the Eagles would have to take the cap hit on before potentially signing Henry to a new deal next offseason.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. This rumor remains something to watch, though nothing is guaranteed.
