Dustin Poirier says his fight against Benoit Saint-Denis “is on” after a “misunderstanding” on his part. Earlier on Thursday, Poirier posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the fight was “off.”
Shortly after saying the fight was off, Poirier spoke to MMA journalist Ariel Helwani to explain his post:
Poirier is coming off a loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC 291, which cost him the “BMF” championship. He’s lost two of his last three fights overall.
Saint-Denis is one of the fastest-rising fighters in mixed martial arts.
After losing his UFC debut against Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos at UFC 267, Saint-Denis has reeled off five straight victories. He earned Performance of the Night honors for his knockout of Matt Frevola at UFC 295 in November.
The bout against Poirier will be by far the highest-profile matchup of Saint-Denis’ career.
UFC 299 is slated for March 9 at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida.
