A 78-year-old man has died after a two-car crash in Crawley last week (February 9). The man, who was driving his Honda Jazz in Ifield Avenue, was involved in a head-on crash with a BMW and was taken to hospital with “serious injuries” before passing away earlier this week (February 13).

The driver of the BMW, a 26-year-old man, initially left the scene before later returning. He was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and has been released on bail until next month (March 10).

In a statement released today (February 15), Sussex Police said: “Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious collision in Ifield Avenue, Crawley. A BMW travelling east on Thursday 9 February at 11.20am collided head on with a Honda Jazz car travelling west.”

The statement continued: “The driver of the BMW, a 26-year-old man left the scene initially but later returned and was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving. He has been released on bail until 10 March pending further enquiries.

“The driver of the Honda Jazz, a 78-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Sadly he died in hospital on Monday 13 February. His next of kin have been informed.

“Anyone who saw the collision, or the BMW being driven prior to the collision, or anyone with relevant dashcam or CCTV footage of the incident is asked to contact police by emailing collision.appeal@sussex.police.uk quoting Operation Earwig.”
