Draymond responds to Tony Allen’s GOAT defender rebuttal

We all knew this was going to happen.

On the latest episode of the Dubs Talk podcast, Draymond Green told Grant Liffmann and Kendra Andrews that he absolutely believes he’s the best defender in NBA history.

Former Boston Celtics and Memphis Grizzlies wing Tony Allen, naturally, had something to say about that.

Of course, Green offered a quick retort, reminding Allen that he was a liability during the Warriors’ 2015 Western Conference semifinals win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

You’ll remember in that 2015 WCF that after the Grizzlies took a two-games-to-one series lead, the Warriors elected to change their defensive strategy and “guard” Allen with center Andrew Bogut, allowing them to have more bodies in the paint to swarm Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph. The adjustment flipped the series and the Warriors went on to win in six games en route to their first of three championships.

Allen responded by pointing to Green’s recent offensive dip over the last few seasons.

 #CallKlay might catch on.

While Green’s tweet is a reminder of Allen’s offensive limitations, there is no doubt the former Grizzlies wing was an excellent defender in his own right. In fact, late Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant called Allen the toughest defender he ever faced.

Green was quick to note in a subsequent tweet that he and Allen don’t have any beef and are merely talking ball.

The Warriors forward is a five-time All-Defensive selection and won the 2016-17 NBA Defensive Player of the Year award. Allen was a six-time All-Defensive selection but never won the DPOY award.

So, who’s the best defender in NBA history?

That’s for Green, Allen and the rest of the candidates to hash out themselves.
