Dodgers’ Tyler Anderson loses no-hitter with one out in ninth vs. Angels on Shohei Ohtani triple

Dodgers lefty Tyler Anderson had gotten through eight innings without allowing a hit. He had thrown 117 pitches. His season high in pitches was previously 101. His career high was 109. He was on his last legs and dealing with the meat of the Angels’ order in Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani and Matt Duffy. 

Anderson was able to get Trout on a looking strikeout and the crowd in Dodger Stadium was really starting to feel it. But then Ohtani lined one down the right-field line and that was it. 

Mookie Betts did all he could there. It was a clean triple. 

The Dodgers ended up winning the game, 4-1, as Craig Kimbrel brought things home for Anderson. Ohtani did score, so Anderson was charged with one run on one hit in 8 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts and two walks. He threw a career-high 123 pitches. 

The Dodgers moved to 39-23, maintaining a percentage-points lead over the 40-24 Padres in the NL West. 

Had Anderson completed no-hitter, there was some possible controversy. The first batter of the game, Taylor Ward, hit a fly ball between Dodgers center fielder Cody Bellinger and right fielder Betts and they ran into each other. As a result, the ball fell to the ground (Ward was thrown out trying to get to second). The play was initially ruled a single but later overturned to an error. 

Anderson, 32, is actually on quite a run. He had a somewhat rough outing last time out, but before that went three straight starts (20 innings) without having allowed a run. He didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning on May 23. Even with the lackluster outing in Chicago last week, Anderson now has a 1.64 ERA in his last six starts. The Dodgers have won all six games. He’s now 8-0 on the year with a 2.82 ERA and 0.94 WHIP. 

The Dodgers are the most prolific no-hitter team in MLB history. They’ve managed to pull it off 26 times. The White Sox are second with 20 no-hitters in club history. The most recent Dodgers no-hitter came in 2018 and it was a combined job with Walker Buehler going six innings before relievers Tony Cingrani, Yimi Garcia and Adam Liberatore brought things home. The last individual Dodgers no-hitter came on June 18, 2014 and it was Clayton Kershaw. 

There have been two no-hitters this season. On April 29, the Mets used five pitchers to pull off the feat and then on May 10, Angels rookie Reid Detmers hurled one.
