Dodgers acquire struggling Joey Gallo from Yankees

SAN FRANCISCO — In the hours before the trade deadline, the Dodgers were able to acquire a left-handed hitting outfielder with home run power and multiple All-Star teams in his past.

Just not that Juan.

Thwarted in their attempt to trade for Juan Soto when the San Diego Padres swung a blockbuster deal with the Washington Nationals, the Dodgers pivoted to Joey Gallo, acquiring the two-time American League All-Star outfielder from the New York Yankees in exchange for pitching prospect Clayton Beeter.

The trade is pending review of medical records.

Gallo, 28, was an All-Star with the Texas Rangers in 2019 and 2021 before going to the Yankees at last year’s trade deadline. Always a high-power, low-average hitter with lots of swing-and-miss, Gallo has struggled since joining the Yankees. In 140 games with them, Gallo hit 25 home runs but batted just .159 with a .660 OPS.

Gallo’s struggles relegated him to a bench role in New York and even that disappeared recently with the arrival of Andrew Benintendi with the Yankees. Gallo can become a free agent this winter.

Beeter, meanwhile, was a compensation-round draft pick out of Texas Tech in 2020, a pick acquired by the Dodgers from the Minnesota Twins in the Mookie Betts-related deal that also sent Kenta Maeda to Minnesota for Brusdar Graterol.

Beeter, 23, was ranked by Baseball America as the Dodgers’ 15th-best prospect this year but he has struggled to stay healthy in his first two professional seasons, logging just 104 innings total. This year at Double-A Tulsa, he had a 5.75 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in 51 2/3 innings.

The Dodgers will have to clear a roster spot for Gallo.
