‘Disgraceful’: Sky pundit rips into one Everton player in Carabao Cup loss v Bournemouth

Sky Sports pundit Tim Sherwood has criticised Everton winger Anthony Gordon for his tackle on Bournemouth’s Jordan Semura.

The Toffees fell to a heavy 4-1 defeat away at the south coast outfit in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

On the stroke of half-time, with Everton a goal down, Gordon brought Zemura down with a crunching tackle.

Referee Darren England opted to show the Toffees man a yellow card, his seventh booking of the season.

VAR was not in operation on the night, and Sherwood believes it would’ve sent Gordon off for the foul.

“I think Gordon should’ve been sent off,” he told Sky Sports News.

“I think if it went to VAR, they’d have had a look at it and I think they’d have sent him off.

“It’s a disgraceful tackle. He’s not had a touch of the ball.

“Everton have been very poor and need to change something at half time.”

Things would get much worse for Frank Lampard’s side after the break.

A Mason Holgate mistake gave Ryan Christie the opportunity to pounce and play a pass towards Jamal Lowe.

The forward’s dragged effort across the face of goal found Junior Stanislas at the back post for an easy tap-in.

To their credit, Everton did halve the deficit midway through the second half.

Alex Iwobi and Neal Maupay combined to set up Demarai Gray, who curled a neat effort into the far corner.

However, the Toffees conceded a third 12 minutes from time, through Emiliano Marcondes.

And just four minutes later, Jaidon Anthony pounced on another Everton error at the back to make it 4-1.

Sherwood wasn’t the only Sky Sports man unimpressed with what he had seen.

“This is up there with the worst Everton performance I’ve seen in the Moshiri era,” said Ben Grounds.

“It is that bad. Defensively absent, and pretty toothless in attack.

“But now, we’re seeing there’s no backbone without Pickford, Coady and Tarkowski. Fans streaming for the exits.

“What makes this so startling is that this is a Bournemouth side who have made nine changes themselves.

“It is the manner in which they have capitulated.

“It is the make-up of the opposition which makes this the darkest night of Lampard’s Everton tenure.”
