Tennis power couple Matteo Berrettini of Italy and Ajla Tomljanović of Australia (formerly Croatia) began dating in 2019. Their support for each other, throughout the highs and lows of the professional tennis tour, was on sweet display in the second episode of

Netflix’s Break Point, which featured the couple at last year’s Australian Open.

However, since Break Point filmed, the two have since called it quits. Here’s a complete timeline of Matteo Berrettini and Ajla Tomljanović’s relationship.

Previously, Tomljanović was linked to fellow Australian player Nick Kyrgios in an on-again, off-again relationship. (Kyrgios is now dating influencer Costeen Hatzi.)

“You can hear people say that they never date a tennis player because, I don’t know, they don’t like that they do the same thing, that it’s always about tennis. But, in reality, we don’t talk about tennis a lot,” Tomljanović shared of dating Berrettini.”When we have the need, it’s really nice to talk to each other because we understand that the best. Those feelings before a big match, or after a tough loss … it’s natural, the way I’m going to react, or he’s going to react. That’s a really nice thing, the understanding about the lifestyle and the priorities. It’s just nice to be on the same page. It definitely works.”

Berrettini echoed this in a different interview, explaining that dating her is “something that is positive because she understands me and knows the demands of the tour. My family also tries to travel with me on certain occasions. I don’t see them as much as I would like, but they are happy to see me enjoy this dream.” Since they started dating, he started playing better. “It’s important to have a person that understands what I’m doing,” he said.

They often cheered each other on.

They both made the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 2021. In this cute video, Tomljanović says, “I like when we both play at the same time… it takes away the stress of when you watch from the locker room.” Berrettini added, “I feel ten times more stressed when I’m watching her match than when I’m actually playing my match.”

“I know her, and I think I know how much she’s tough on herself,” Berrettini said of Tomljanović in October 2021. “I’m always telling her that she has to kind of tell herself that she achieved a lot during her career, and she has to enjoy what she’s doing.”

Ahead of the Australian Open in 2022, they were pictured training together (this also features in Break Point).

They broke up sometime in spring 2022.

“Yeah, I’m single but it’s not like something that I am looking for, like, it’s not that I’m waking up and have to find love,” Berrettini said a press conference at the Queen’s Club Championships in June, confirming their split. “It’s just something that is happening, it’s good for me, if it doesn’t, it’s another day, you know. But, yeah, overall, I’m spending more time with my team, I spent a lot of time with my family when I was injured, and I enjoyed a different kind of life a little bit.”

There’s no word yet on whether or not their break-up will feature in the back half of Break Point episodes, which drop in June 2023.
