Devils trading Tyler Toffoli to Jets

The Devils are trading veteran center Tyler Toffoli to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for two draft picks, per multiple reports.

While speaking with reporters last week, team president and GM Tom Fitzgerald said the club wasn’t shopping the impending free agent and that they hoped to come to an agreement on a long-term deal.

But with the two sides reportedly far apart on terms and the market for goal-scorers so crowded ahead of the deadline, plans changed, and now the 31-year-old’s time in New Jersey is over.

The Devils acquired Toffoli this offseason in a deal that sent defenseman Yegor Sharangovich and a 2023 third-round pick to the Calgary Flames with hopes that he’d help them make a deep playoff run for the second consecutive year.

Things haven’t quite gone as planned for the team, however, as they parted ways with head coach Lindy Ruff last week and sit on the outside looking in at the playoff picture.

While the team has taken a step back, Toffoli has remained the top-six scoring threat he’s been throughout his 12-year career. The former second-round pick led New Jersey with 26 goals, eight of which came with the man advantage, to go along with 18 assists for a total of 44 points through 61 games.

He’ll now look to make his mark down the stretch with the Jets.
