The Lions aren’t the only pro sports team in Detroit undergoing a radical transformation under new management. The Pistons are too, and the NBA team in town got a huge boost in its rebuilding efforts on Tuesday.

The Pistons won the NBA’s draft lottery on Tuesday night, earning the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft. It’s a premium pick for a basketball team in need of a premium talent.

Detroit entered the lottery as one of three teams with equal odds to win the lottery, along with Orlando and Houston. The Pistons prevailed, with the Rockets earning the second pick and the Cleveland Cavaliers getting lucky and winning the third pick instead of the Magic, who will now pick fifth.

The NFL doesn’t have a lottery for the non-playoff teams and draft picks, so the Lions can’t be so lucky. Two Pistons players made the NBA’s All-Rookie team this past week and the team struck paydirt with free agent Jerami Grant last offseason. The Pistons are a year ahead of the Lions on the rebuild schedule. Here’s hoping the Lions can get the kind of good fortune the Pistons got with the first year under rookie GM Troy Weaver in the coming months.
