Destiny 2 just unloaded a metric ton of information about its upcoming expansion, its current season and other plans it has for the Destiny universe. It’s a massive amount of details packed into a 40 minute showcase, and I’m going to do my best to summarize everything significant we learned to day. It’s a whole lot, so bear with me.
LIGHTFALL
The main destination was revealed to be a secret, Cyberpunk-looking city on Neptune that no one ever knew existed until now. It has an entirely new “race” of allies, Cloudstriders, who have been out there living their lives free of all our drama, but now the Darkness has found them.
The main thrust of the storyline is that Calus has bred a new, Darkness-enhanced army of Cabal to lay siege to this city, and we must go help stop him. This includes some modified Cabal enemies and some brand new ones, monstrous Tormentors that look like the love child of Rhulk and an Elden Ring dungeon boss.

The fifth subclass is indeed the second Darkness subclass, and it’s called Strand. While green, it is not based on plants or poison, at least not in an obvious sense (I suspect it has roots in Egregore, as it talks about a psychic communication network we reach into). It’s a new power no one has wielded before, and we are just learning to use it. It seems very…rope based. Everyone has the ability to use a grappling hook like ability that can latch onto thin air. New supers are slashy strand hands for Titan, missiles for Warlocks and a rope dart for Hunters.
NEW PLAYER ONBOARDING
There was an entire section about how Bungie is going to try to better explain the game for new players who do not know what to do. This will be rooted in something called a Guardian Rank system that steers players through the game, but also appears to reward players for being Sherpas for new players.
There is a new commendation system coming where you can reward teammates for positive behavior.

At long, long last, there are in-game LFG tools coming to the game where you can find groups for the game’s harder, non-matchmade activities without needing to go to Bungie’s app or website.
Finally, Destiny is getting a saved loadout system, a single screen where you can place all your mods and then save and switch loadouts on the fly. Again, an in-game way to do this at last without relying on third party tools.
SEASON 18 – SEASON OF PLUNDER
This season is called Season of Plunder and has Eramis de-thawing from ice, as predicted. Rather than join The Witness, she’s off becoming a pirate, and we are teaming up with Mithrax, Eido and Drifter to stop her. Spider is involved in here somewhere too.

The pirate theme pervades all of this season, from cosmetics to new exotics. The two main activities are a ship-boarding pirate battle where you launch yourself onto the deck of enemy ships. Then another activity based around getting at chest full of treasure. Finally, there’s something about finding maps that lead to pirate captains around the system you must kill.
The reprised raid this season is King’s Fall, which launches Friday. We do not yet know what changes or updates may have been made to it yet, old armor and weapons returning.
FINAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
An Epic Game Store collaboration where anyone who downloads the game there gets the 30th Anniversary Pack (essentially a dungeon) for free. The Epic deal also comes with Fortnite armor skins in Destiny, and Destiny NPCs (Ikora, Zavala, The Exo Stranger) coming to Fortnite. And Fall Guys is getting Destiny skins because Epic owns that now.

Bungie has announced no more expansions will be content vaulted from here. They said they wanted everyone to be able to play the whole game start to finish, but they did not announce that previously sunset things would return.
All this week, Destiny expansions are free-to-play on every platform, including Witch Queen. But just for this week.
Those are the major announcements. Now I have ten minutes to format and publish this before season 18 goes lives so wish me luck! More thoughts later in video form.
