Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) guaranteed Republicans victory in 2024 if he is the nominee and boasted that his Twitter campaign launch broke the internet.
DeSantis said this in a more traditional campaign appearance on Fox News, hosted by former South Carolina GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy, with whom he served in the House.

“The pledge I’ll make for people is simply this,” DeSantis said. “We need to win again as Republicans. We gotta dispense with this culture of losing. And if you nominate me, I pledge to you that on Jan. 20, 2025, at high noon, that I’ll be the guy in the west side of the Capitol with the left hand on the Bible and the right hand in the air taking the oath of office as the 47th president of the United States. No more excuses.”
DeSantis’s message is a subtle rebuke to former President Donald Trump, his main rival for the GOP nomination. Trump once vowed that Republicans would get tired of winning under his watch.
Instead, Republicans lost control of the House in 2018, lost the White House two years later, and then lost the Senate after Trump’s election fraud protests depressed conservative turnout in a pair of Georgia runoff elections.
Trump-endorsed candidates then underperformed in the midterm elections, leaving the Senate under Democratic control. In the aftermath of those races, DeSantis surged in the national and early state polls. The Floridian had just been reelected governor in a landslide, bucking an otherwise disappointing trend for the GOP.
But Trump has rebounded since then. He now leads DeSantis by nearly 36 points in the national RealClearPolitics polling average, and no other Republican candidate is even close to them.
The DeSantis team brushed off technical glitches that disrupted their candidate’s presidential announcement Wednesday night, saying the enthusiasm for him “broke the internet.” After giving out the address for his campaign website to solicit donations, DeSantis quipped on Fox News, “Maybe we can break that part of the internet as well.”
Some polls have shown DeSantis to be a stronger general election candidate against President Joe Biden, both nationally and in the battleground states, than Trump.
“We’re really excited with the enthusiasm,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis is joining a race that already includes Trump, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, among others.
The Florida governor is the only candidate besides Trump who consistently polls in the double digits.
