Dennis Waterman ’s family confirmed that the actor passed away in Spain on Sunday afternoon, with his wife Pam Flint at his side.
A statement from the family said: “We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved Dennis passed away very peacefully at his home in Spain.
“The family kindly ask that our privacy is respected at this very difficult time.”
Waterman had an impressive career that spanned 60 years and saw the Cockney actor performing on TV, in films and on the West End.
He was one of the most popular TV actors of the 1970s and has been hailed an “icon”.

Dennis was known for his roles in The Sweeney, Minder and New Tricks, but the successful actor also took on a substantial amount of other work throughout his lengthy career.
His diverse acting career saw him take on parts in theatre, film, television and the West End and while he was known for his tough-guy leading roles, Waterman’s career also included roles in a range of genres such as drama, adventure, comedy and romance.

Dennis began building his fortune when he was just 12 years old during his role in the movie Night Train for Inverness.
For the rest of his teenage years, Dennis performed in an array of roles both on and off screen.
In the 1960s the young star played the lead role of Oliver Twist in a production of Oliver! at a theatre in London.
When he was 14 he also starred as William Brown in the BBC TV series William.
Dennis landed his first major role in 1968 with his role as Peter in Up the Junction.
The height of the actor’s career, however, came in the 1970s which saw Waterman star in BBC’s Colditz as well as taking on the roles of DS George Carter in The Sweeney and Terry McCann in Minder.
More recently, Dennis starred in the drama series New Tricks, which he joined in 2003 and was in until 2014.
The project that marks the end of Waterman’s 60-year career is the Australian drama-comedy film Never Too Late, which was released in 2020.
