Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp has revealed that he would be open to returning to the club as part of the coaching staff ‘when the time is right’.

Bergkamp is one of the Gunners’ all-time greatest players and scored 120 goals for the club between 1995 and 2006, while he won three league titles and three FA Cups.

After retiring from playing he was offered the chance to be a scout for Arsenal but preferred to spend time with his family.

Bergkamp later entered coaching and eventually became Ajax’s assistant manager before being sacked from that position in December 2017.

He hasn’t been involved in coaching since but plans to return eventually, with Arsenal his preferred destination.

‘When the time is right, I’d love to go back and get a role somewhere,’ he told FourFourTwo.

‘At the moment we’re great in Holland. I’ve got a young family and have been out of coaching for a little while now.

‘But I must admit, I have the urge to go on the pitch again and help, whether it’s with the technical or coaching staff.’

The 51-year-old revealed that he has yet to receive any coaching offers but he is open to a return to the game.

He said: ‘It might be a bit too early, but you never know. We’ll see what comes my way.

‘At the moment there hasn’t been any contact about that, but as soon as I make my decision, let’s see what happens.

‘Of course it would be ideal at Arsenal – I spent 11 years there and have a good feeling with the club.’

Bergkamp admitted that he is ‘really interested’ in the work that Mikel Arteta is doing at Arsenal.

He said: ‘I’m really interested in Mikel Arteta and how he’s doing at Arsenal, as there have been signs that he wants to change their philosophy.

‘It looked good in the few matches I watched earlier in the year. But my future, who knows? In football, one day is not the same as the other.’

Freddie Ljungberg, who, like Bergkamp was part of Arsenal’s legendary invincibles team, is part of Arteta’s coaching staff as an assistant coach.
