Democrats unite against potential Jim Jordan speakership: ‘Extremist extraordinaire’

Following Rep. Jim Jordan’s (R-OH) nomination for the speakership by the House Republican Conference, Democrats immediately slammed the potential of his election to the post.

The swift denunciation of Jordan’s potential to become House speaker is further evidence of the House Democrats’ united front against the fractured House GOP.

BIDEN CLOSED Q3 WITH MORE CASH ON HAND THAN ENTIRE GOP FIELD

“House Republicans have selected as their nominee to be the speaker of the people’s House the chairman of the chaos caucus,” said Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) after Jordan’s nomination. He was referring to Jordan’s membership in the House Freedom Caucus, a hard-line group of Republican lawmakers who have become a sore spot for leadership. Jordan was once chairman of the caucus.

Jeffries further claimed he was “a defender in a dangerous way of dysfunction, and an extremist extraordinaire.”

Similar sentiments about Jordan were shared among other Democrats, including Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA) and Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA).

“Every Republican who cast their vote for him is siding with an insurrectionist against our democracy,” Clark claimed.

According to Lieu, Jordan “will absolutely do everything he can to not certify a Biden victory. That’s what he did before,” referring to Jordan’s January 2021 vote against certifying the 2020 election results, which the majority of the Republican conference also voted against.

“Jim Jordan is an extreme MAGA Republican insurrectionist who is currently defying a lawful Congressional subpoena,” Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “He is the House GOP’s nominee for Speaker. A Jordan speakership would be incredibly harmful for our country.”

Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) also blasted Jordan on X, writing, “Last year a 10-year-old girl had to travel to end her pregnancy, which resulted from rape, because of Ohio’s abortion ban. Jim Jordan called her horrifying true story a ‘lie’ and suggested states could force girls who are raped to give birth. Republicans want him to be Speaker.”

“Jim Jordan admitted he spoke to Donald Trump on January 6 and voted to overturn the election, yet he defied a subpoena to testify about his role in the insurrection. Have any Republicans asked Jim Jordan about his role on Jan 6 in deciding whether to support him for speaker?” Rep. Daniel Goldman (D-NY) wrote.

As Democrats project a united conference in opposition to Jordan, they are additionally united behind Jeffries. The conference is prepared to nominate Jeffries for speaker, and supply him with 212 votes. He would need only five GOP defectors to snatch the speakership.

Some centrist Republican lawmakers have said they’re open to discussions across the aisle over a bipartisan speaker as the GOP conference appears far from being able to select an agreed-upon leader.

It remains unclear whether Jordan will achieve the 217 needed votes on the House floor in order to become speaker. He defeated the relatively unknown Rep. Austin Scott (R-GA) in a secret conference ballot, with 81 colleagues voting against him. When conference members were asked if they would vote for him on the floor, just 152 said they would, paving a long road to the needed 217.

Following the nomination, the House adjourned and lawmakers returned home for the weekend.
