Delta Work Grand National 2023 odds and race record

Delta Work #DeltaWork

Like his former stablemate Tiger Roll, the Gordon Elliott-trained Delta Work has now won a pair of Cross Country races at Cheltenham – but the question remains whether he can emulate the little legend by scoring in the Aintree Grand National as well.

Delta Work Grand National chances

A brown gelding, Delta Work is a proven quality performer and has won 11 times in his career, with nine of those victories coming from 20 starts in chases.

Having lost his way at the top level in the 2021-22 season, Elliott opted to have a crack at the unique Cross Country race in Cheltenham in March 2022, and there Jack Kennedy’s partner denied the great Tiger Roll in a thriller.

After that, he was third in this race behind Noble Yeats last April. He scored at Punchestown on his seasonal comeback in the Risk Of Thunder, and then his campaign was based on peaking for last month’s Cheltenham assignment and another crack at this target.

Delta Work odds to win the 2023 Grand National

Now a 10-year-old, Delta Work was as high as 25/1 early in the season but is now down to 8/1 in the National betting and is second favourite behind Corach Rambler.

Last year his starting price was bigger, at 10/1, but with 5lb less on his back this time around he has a better chance of getting closer to the 2022 winner and runner-up, Noble Yeats and Any Second Now.

Kennedy had him perhaps a little further back than ideal last year, and it will be interesting to see if Keith Donoghue can ride him closer to the pace this time.

A quality operator in his pomp, there is every reason to believe that, now a decade old, this could be the prime moment for Delta Work to shine in this race.

Delta Work record in the Grand National

Who will be riding Delta Work for the Grand National?

Kennedy was on board last year, but he has been out injured since January after breaking a leg for a fifth time and missed the Cheltenham Festival.

He was close to a return but has not got back to fitness for the Grand National.

Jordan Gainford replaced Kennedy at Cheltenham, riding Gerri Colombe to a close second in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase, but he also misses out at Aintree.

That means it is Irish jockey Donoghue who will ride Delta Work in the Grand National.

Who is Delta Work’s trainer?

Elliott has a strong team for Aintree, with Delta Work spearheading alongside Galvin, who finished second to him at Cheltenham last month.

The Cullentra handler had his first winner in this race in 2007 with Silver Birch and, of course, famously enjoyed back-to-back victories with Tiger Roll in 2018 and 2019.

Were Elliott to win on April 15, he would equal the record tally of four Grand National victories at Aintree, held by Fred Rimell and George Dockeray.
