David de Gea mistake: Brutal compilation of goalkeeper’s performance vs Aston Villa

David de Gea is being blamed after Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa in Perth.

United led 2-0 at half time as they looked to maintain their 100% record in pre-season under Erik ten Hag.

However, they had to settle for a draw after a second half comeback from Steven Gerrard’s side.

Leon Bailly pulled a goal back with a fine finish just minutes after the restart.

Then, with the last touch of the match, Calum Chambers headed home from a corner to make it 2-2.

However, many United supporters are blaming De Gea for being commanding from the corner.

The Spanish goalkeeper wasn’t strong enough and allowed Villa youngster Cameron Archer to disrupt him into his own six-yard box. It allowed Chambers to head home.

But it’s not just that goal.

That’s because one fan has made a rather brutal compilation of De Gea’s performance in difficult conditions during the 2-2 draw.

While he didn’t exactly have a stinker, he will be disappointed with how he dealt with two Villa corners.

Many United fans reacted to his performance – and they weren’t kind.

After being asked if it was harsh to blame De Gea for Villa’s late equaliser, Ten Hag said: “I have to see it back.”

A lot has been made of De Gea’s ability to play the ball out of the back with his feet – something he has been criticised for in the past. But under Ten Hag, De Gea knows he will be required to do just that.

But when asked if he felt confident with the ball at his feet, the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper was in no doubt.

“Yeah. Of course, if you want to play from the back you need a good structure, you need a lot of options, especially from the guys who are at the back,” De Gea said.

“Of course, that’s fundamental, to have a lot of options and I think we’re doing well. We showed against Crystal Palace we built from the back really well and scored some good goals.

“I think I showed already. If you watch my games with the national team or when we played with Sir Alex at the beginning, you could see it, I don’t need to show to anyone.

“I’ve been playing for many years. I will try my best; I will try to help the team and help us play.

“As always, I’m going to stay quiet, calm and try to show that to the team and play out from the back.”

When asked if Ten Hag has asked him to change his game, De Gea suggested he hadn’t.

“No, not really,” the goalkeeper insisted.

“I mean, obviously, with different managers, you have to adapt to the way they want us to play.

“But I used to play like this in the national team for many years, so I’m comfortable to be honest.

“We want to build from the back, I want to be ready to give options to the players to play from the back and of course, be ready for the long balls. And the most important thing for me is saving shots, making the saves and helping the team.”
