Manchester United striker target Darwin Nunez is reportedly ‘intrigued’ by a move to Old Trafford, while Fabrizio Romano claims agent ‘relations’ could help the Red Devils complete the move.
Manchester United can already rely on Cristiano Ronaldo up front. And new boss Erik ten Hag insists the Portuguese legend is part of his plans.
But Ronaldo is clearly in the twilight years of his career so Manchester United officials must get to work on finding a successor.
Their top target seems to be Nunez, who was in great form for Benfica during the 2021-22 campaign.
He hit 34 goals in just 41 matches, finishing as the Primeira Liga’s top scorer. Six of those goals came in 10 Champions League outings.
Nunez clearly has the movement and eye for goal which would make him a success in a top-five league. And at 22 years old, any investing club would potentially get years of top-class service.
United have put £81million on the table for Nunez, only to be told a bigger offer is needed.
They have since come up with an improved bid worth £90m, which could include two players – Anthony Martial and Eric Bailly. But it remains to be seen if this will be enough.
Both the i and Romano have given updates on United’s pursuit of the Uruguay international.
According to the i, Nunez is ‘intrigued’ by the potential to work under Ten Hag in Manchester.
While this doesn’t guarantee he will end up there, it may give United the edge over Nunez’s other suitors.
Transfer guru Romano has also spoken about the star’s future. He claims Liverpool want Nunez, but the price and United’s agent ‘relations’ may help the latter win the race.
“He wants Premier League football, it’s important to say. Many clubs are exploring this opportunity but Darwin Nunez has priorities to move to the Premier League,” Romano said on the Here We Go podcast.
“Manchester United are discussing him internally, he is a target of Man United but also Liverpool. It depends on the price because Liverpool won’t pay €100m (£85.2m) for him, they want to pay way less.

“Also Man United are discussing the price, they have good relations with his agent who is close to Jorge Mendes. So Darwin Nunez is a possibility for Liverpool and Man United.”
Mendes represents Ronaldo, which is where the link between United and Nunez’s agent may stem from.
The Red Devils appear to be in pole position for the attacker, but transfer windows are never simple.
There will be plenty of twists and turns before Nunez’s future is finalised. One thing is pretty much guaranteed – he will get a big move, whether it be this summer or next.
And Benfica will make a huge profit after helping to develop him into one of the world’s most promising strikers. They paid Almeria £21.6m for Nunez in September 2020.
Meanwhile, Wednesday’s Transfer Gossip has the latest on Alessandro Bastoni’s future, amid links with United and Tottenham.
