Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has explained how as a substitute he is fuelled by the ‘anger’ of being left out of his side’s starting line-up.

The Uruguayan was a second-half substitute before devastatingly netting twice in Sunday’s remarkable comeback victory at Newcastle. The former Benfica striker produced two deadly finishes to stun the home side and secure a stunning victory for the Reds.

The 24-year-old has had to make do with a place on the bench for each of Jurgen Klopp’s side’s three Premier League fixtures to date this campaign. That has limited him to just 41 minutes of action to date – frustrating for any player, never mind the club’s second highest record signing.

He has now opened up on his frustrations – which also saw him start just half of the Premier League matches for the Reds in his opening campaign for the club last term – and how being overlooked for a starting spot allows him to channel his frustration positively to prove his boss wrong.

Nunez told an interview with Uruguay’s Sport 890, in quotes carried by Sport Witness : “The minutes I get to play I always try to give my best. When it’s my turn to be on the bench, I go in angry in a good way because I always want to prove myself.”

The striker added of his embrace with boss Klopp following the stunning win: “The hug with Klopp after the match shows what a good relationship there is. I’m very happy for my moment. I always prepare myself in the best way for when it’s my turn.”

The euphoria of the dramatic late victory for the visitors left Klopp ecstatic and at the full time whistle he rushed onto the pitch to hug any Reds player he could lay his hands on. His embrace with Nunez was particularly meaningful due to his impact of securing the stunning with for the 10-men.

It has not always been plain sailing for Nunez since his switch from the Lisbon giants a year ago as he has at times struggled to find his best form and, despite devastating moments of chaos in attacks, may often lack the control that sets apart the elite strikers from the rest.

Klopp will be hopeful that he will be able to keep channelling his feelings positively to continue making genuine impacts for his side throughout the rest of the campaign.
