Daniel O’Donnell leads tributes to renowned Irish country music singer Seamus McGee after ‘gentleman’s’ tragic death

DANIEL O’Donnell has led the tributes for renowned country music singer Seamus McGee after his death yesterday.

Donegal native Seamus, who was from Gaoth Dobhair, sadly passed away at Galway University Hospital.

Daniel O’Donnell said he was ‘shocked’ to hear of Seamus’ death

He always had a deep love for music and the Irish language, writing, recording and performing some of his beloved tunes in Irish.

Taking to social media today, fellow Donegal singer Daniel O’Donnell extended his sympathies to the family of Seamus and revealed he spoke with him the day before his sad passing.

He said: “I’m shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Seamus McGee. I spoke to him on the phone on Tuesday afternoon.

“On behalf of Majella and myself I sent our sincere sympathy to Sarah, Ciara, Cian and all the McGee family.

“Rest in Peace Seamus.”

Seamus is predeceased by his parents Gracie and Mickey and by his brother Cathal.

He will be “sadly missed” by his wife Sarah, daughter Ciara, son Cian, his sister Breid and extended family and friends.

Seamus had fronted The Nashville Showband and played at a variety of venues around the country in his prime.

And Daniel’s sister Margo, who was good friends with Seamus, told how she had once toured with the proud Donegal man.

She wrote: “He was a gentleman and a friend always. We toured England together and I have lovely memories.

“Heaven’s choir has a new voice today. Rest with God, my friend.”

Other tributes have poured in for Seamus as news of his death spreads.

Dermot Moriarty from Radio Kerry said: “Very sad to hear of the passing of Seamus, I have know him over 40 yearsand the great days of Paschal Mooney on Radio 1 and Failte Records.

“My sincere condolences to his wife Sarah and family and to his manyfriends in music. Rest In Peace Seamus.”

Another mourner said: “May heaven welcome you with open arms and give you everlasting peace at the top table forever.”

A third added: “My sincere condolences go to the McGee families on their sad loss of Seamus…will be sadly missed by all. Rest in peace.”

Seamus will repose at Roarty’s Funeral Home in Derrybeg on Friday and Saturday from 1-8pm.

There will be rosary both nights at 8pm.

There will be a removal to his late residence on Saturday after the rosary. The family have asked that house remains strictly private to family and close friends that night and the morning of the funeral.

A funeral mass will take place at 1pm in St. Mary’s Church, Derrybeg, interment afterwards in Maghergallon Cemetery.
