Murphy was drafted by the Mets in 2006 and made his MLB debut for the franchise in 2008. During his tenure, he helped lead the team to its fifth World Series appearance in franchise history, contributing a historic playoff performance and NLCS MVP honors in 2015.

The historic 2015 postseason saw Murphy homer in six consecutive playoff games, including all four games of the NLCS resulting in the Mets sweeping the Chicago Cubs. Murphy retires with the record for most consecutive postseason games with at least one home run.

Murphy spent two seasons with the Nationals, during which he received his most recent nod as an All-Star and was runner-up for NL MVP honors in 2017.
