ANDRE ONANA was supposed to be Manchester United’s saviour when he arrived from Inter Milan this summer.

The £47m man was brought in to replace David De Gea because of his outstanding ability with his feet, but damning stats suggest the decision was a HUGE mistake for the Red Devils.

Onana arrived at Old Trafford to replace De Gea who the season before had won the Premier League Golden Glove.

The Spaniard spent over 12 years in Manchester and was once heralded as the best keeper in the league.

But as time went on questions were asked about his distribution and in his latter seasons with United many critics felt the shot-stopper was lagging behind the “modern day goalkeeper”.

Ten Hag made the cutthroat decision to replace De Gea as a result of this, but stats have shown that the man who filled his gloves is performing significantly worse.

When comparing Onana’s time at Man Utd to De Gea’s final three seasons there is a clear disparity between the pair when it comes to crucial stats.

Ten Hag’s new arrival has conceded an average of 1.8 goals per game since stepping in between the sticks while De Gea averaged out at just 1.23 goals per game.

Onana has also been making mistakes since joining the Manchester giants and is currently averaging an error leading to a goal every ten games, compared to De Gea giving away a goal just once every 20 games.

On top of this, the Cameroonian is stopping just 65.7% of the shots he faces compared to De Gea who kept out just shy of 70% of the efforts that came his way.

And perhaps fans may point towards the fact that Onana’s main selling point was his ability to use his feet in a significantly better manner that the man he replaced.

But stats from Manchester United’s 3-2 loss to Galatasaray last night in the Champions League show shockingly poor distribution from the keeper.

Just 57% of Onana’s passes against the Turkish outfit found a Man United player with an abysmal 16 wayward balls missing their target.

To add insult to injury he was almost entirely at fault for Galatasaray’s penalty after passing the ball directly into the path of Dries Mertens who had to be taken down by Casemiro to prevent a certain goal.

United were reduced to ten men as a result too as Casemiro had already been booked earlier in the match and received a second yellow card for the foul.

Luckily for Onana his blushes were spared when Mauro Icardi fired the spot kick wide of the post.

But the Argentine striker dinked the ball over the goalkeeper a matter of minutes later in another shocking moment that didn’t cover Onana in any glory.

And United fans’ patience is wearing thin after a flurry of poor performances from their number 24.

Some fans have even been reminiscing on the days of De Gea after the 32-year-old teased them online last night with a cryptic post.
