Daisy Lowe: ‘I once skinny dipped with friends on New Year’s Eve in the Maldives’

I discovered natural wine in Croatia between lockdowns last summer
Flying into Split, I ended up on the island of Hvar and it was so cool. People sell olive oil and natural wine from the side of the road, and the wine is super potent. But because it’s free from sulphates and preservatives, you get less of a hangover from it.
I’m 32 going on 82 so I love a holiday with plenty of nature, some beautiful views and a good book
The right travelling companion is imperative, too. I need someone who is laid-back, up for doing their own thing, has a bright and happy energy and is also very tidy. A messy person will stress me out.
I visited Portugal for the first time last year
Lisbon is beautiful, and my boyfriend took me to the Time Out food market, like Borough Market in London, where Michelin-starred guest chefs conjure up incredible dishes. We went to a fishing village called Ericeira where I tried to learn to surf. I’m a real perfectionist so being bad at stuff is annoying. I veered between shocking, great and absolutely hopeless.
My mum loves Morocco so for a while we went every year for her birthday
Our best trip was when we took a donkey ride through the Atlas Mountains and visited a Berber market where my mum tried to buy every rug on every stall. The weirdest stall – in between people selling goats’ heads – was a medicine man selling hundreds of tiny orbs. I’m not sure what they were, perhaps just existential healing lights.
I stayed in a tree-house hotel called The Post Ranch Inn, at Big Sur on the California coast, and it was mesmerising
It’s eco-conscious and solar-powered; they grow their own vegetables, there’s a Michelin-starred restaurant and infinity pools, and you can use a telescope to gaze at the clear night sky.
I treasure a pillow from The Caruso, a palazzo hotel in Ravello on Italy’s Amalfi coast
They hand-embroidered my initials on it and it looked like spun gold.
The most heavenly place I’ve modelled is Trancoso, in Brazil – a collection of villas where I shot the 2010 Pirelli calendar
It’s paradise, and we could have whatever we wanted. It was like, “Do you want a margarita at breakfast time?” to which I replied, “Why not?” We were running around in our bikinis and I remember thinking, “Is this really my job?” Aged 20, I didn’t know how good I had it. It’s been pretty much downhill since then.
Paris is the world’s most fashionable city, for sure
Wherever you go, everyone is inspiring, from three-year-olds to 80-year-olds. Even pensioners look painfully cool. During fashion week, I always take my Polaroid camera to take pictures of people on the street. It’s an incredibly tasteful city. Even the kebab shops are in really beautiful buildings.
I once skinny-dipped with 10 friends on New Year’s Eve in the Maldives
When we swam through the water, these tiny creatures moved electrically so it looked like we were swimming through stars. One of my mates was appalled that not everyone knew every single word to Auld Lang Syne and he made us learn it, word perfect.
From the age of 17 to 21 I was always on planes
There was this incident when I got a job for Italian Vogue and we were grounded on the tarmac for hours, missing my own birthday party. I had a panic attack. From that point on, I developed increasingly bad anxiety about flying. I’ve only been able to improve it recently by ingesting CBD oil or using it in a hand cream, which has cut the anxiety 100 per cent.
I’ve kicked my international owl-collecting habit these days
For a while, I always bought owl products wherever I went, then my mum started buying me loads of other things with owls on them. I realised that I didn’t love the birds that much. Now I will buy more individual items, such as this beautiful single tile that I bought in Lisbon, which is now a gorgeous coaster in my kitchen.
Turks and Caicos was a big disappointment for me
I went on a girls’ holiday and we splurged on flights as well as an amazing luxurious room we were sharing – but none of us slept a wink because there was a haunted, negative energy to it. When we researched the place, it turned out there had been pirates involved in raping, pillaging, and general violence. It just had this really unsettling air and sadly didn’t live up to our expectations.
I tend to wear my pyjamas on the plane and then change into something more glamorous when I arrive
When I went to the Cannes Film Festival, for instance, I walked off the plane in a nice linen suit and sunglasses.
