Cyberpunk 2077, one of the most anticipated titles of 2020, has been delayed once again. Now the game’s set to arrive on December 10, three weeks after its previously scheduled drop date.

CD Projekt Red, the studio behind The Witcher III, announced the new release date on its social media accounts on Tuesday. Adam Badowski and Marcin Iwinski, the board of directors at the Polish developer and publisher, wrote a lengthy note to the game’s fans explaining why they had to push back the release for a third time.

Here’s the statement in full:

“Today, we’ve decided to move the release date of Cyberpunk 2077 by 21 days. Most likely, there are many emotions and questions in your heads, so first and foremost, please accept our humble apologies.

The biggest challenge for us right now is shipping the game on current-gen, next-gen and PC at the same time, which requires us to prepare and test 9 versions of it while working from home. Since Cyberpunk 2077 evolved towards almost being a next-gen title somewhere along the way, we need to make sure everything works well and every version runs smoothly. We’re aware it might seem unrealistic when someone says that 21 days can make any difference in such a massive and complex game, but they really do.

Some of you might also be wondering what these words mean in light of us saying we achieved gold master some time ago. Passing certification, or ‘going gold,’ means the game is ready, can be completed, and has all content in it. But it doesn’t mean we stop working on it and raising the quality bar. On the contrary, this is the time where many improvements are being made which will then be distributed via a Day 0 patch. This is the time period we under calculated.

We feel we have an amazing game on our hands and are willing to make every decision, even the hardest ones, if it ultimately leads to you getting a video game you’ll fall in in love with.”

As mentioned above, this is the third time that CD Projekt Red has announced a delay of Cyberpunk 2077. The game was originally announced at E3 2019 with an initial April 2020 release date window, before being pushed back to September 2020, and then again to November 19.

The news of the latest delay comes a month after a Bloomberg report stated that CD Projekt Red was mandating six-day work weeks for its employees in the weeks leading up to Cyberpunk 2077’s now-abandoned November launch.

Fans called on CD Projekt Red to delay the game again following the Bloomberg report to avoid forcing employees to work overtime to make sure the game was released on time.

This reported new mandate goes back on the 2019 promise from Iwinski that the studio would avoid “crunch,” an industry term for excessive overtime in game development, and wouldn’t force overtime on its employees.
