Cristiano Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodriguez faced heartbreaking news in April this year, as one of their twins died shortly after birth. The footballer has now opened up on the family’s pain of losing his son, Angel.

The other twin, a girl named Bella Esmeralda, survived the birth. When Ronaldo brought little Bella home to his and Georgina’s other four children, they had many questions that left the couple heartbroken. Ronaldo and Rodriguez have been dating since 2016 and already have a daughter named Alana, three. Ronaldo also has a son Cristiano Jnr, 12, and twins Eva and Mateo, four – all three were born to two surrogate mothers.

Talking to Piers Morgan on TalkTV this week, Ronaldo spoke on the tragedy and the aftermath it left behind. He shared that his older children were confused and had questions.

Ronaldo said: “In the beginning, Geo [Georgina] arrives home and the kids start to say where’s the other baby? Where’s the other baby?”

He continues to describe how he told his eldest son the sad news first. “Of course [with] Cristiano, I had a conversation with him in the day, because he’s 12 years old, he knows, understands everything, and I had a nice conversation with him.

“We cried together in his bedroom and explained and it’s kind of – he doesn’t understand, he does understand, but in the same way he was a little bit confused.”

Ronaldo then said how he told the younger kids one week after the birth, as he felt it was necessary to be honest. “After one week I say, ‘Let’s be up front and let’s be honest with the kids, let’s say that, Angel, they go to Heaven’,” he said.

Ronaldo also revealed that the royal family showed their support by sending him a letter of condolence in April, after the couple made a public statement.

In the joint statement, they said: “It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away. It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel. Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.

“Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you.”

As one of the world’s most famous footballers in history, Ronaldo continued on to explain that he had “many competitions” and that playing football didn’t stop, not even in times of struggle. “It was probably the most difficult moment in my life.”

The 37-year-old added that he keeps Angel’s ashes close to his fathers ashes, who died of liver failure in 2005.

“I talk with them all the time and they are on my side,” he added. “You know they help me to be a better man, to be a better person, to be a better father. And it’s something that I am really proud of… the message that they send me, especially my son.”
