Ange Postecoglou laid down the law to Cristian Romero as he went against the Tottenham star’s wishes to substitute him just seconds after scoring.
The Argentine was named in Spurs’ starting XI at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday as the ex-Celtic boss looked to get his Premier League stint off to a flier. Postecoglou got the quick start that he had desired as Romero opened the scoring with a thunderous header from James Maddison’s free-kick.
A VAR check for a potential offside did curtail his celebrations slightly but the goal was eventually awarded. Whilst he was then allowed to toast just his second goal for the club, Romero’s delight then turned into frustration.
Shortly before his goal he appeared to receive a bang to the head in a tussle with Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo and received subsequent treatment. As he walked back to the restart, he was surrounded by team-mates but expressed his wish to continue.
Postecoglou was not particularly convinced as he beckoned the defender over to the bench. Romero continued to protest but he eventually relented and was then replaced by fellow centre-back Davinson Sanchez.
TV cameras then cut to Romero throwing down his substitutes’ bib to the floor in huge frustration. It has not been confirmed whether the decision to take him off the pitch was due to concussion but Romero could be set for a stint on the sidelines if that is revealed to be the case.

FA guidelines suggest that players should be given a period of 14 days’ rest away from the pitch. Should Romero had suffered from concussion, that could potentially see him miss upcoming Premier League games against Manchester United and Bournemouth.
Brentford took full advantage of Romero’s withdrawal as they hauled themselves level. New Spurs captain Son Heung-Min tripped Mathias Jensen in the penalty area.
The referee Robert Jones was initially unmoved, only to be encouraged to take another look at the incident. He then awarded a spot-kick which was dispatched by Mbeumo. Yoane Wissa then put Brentford Emerson Royal equalised for the visitors.

The new top has been claimed to “build on more than a century of tradition” and is a fresh update to the iconic kit that gave Spurs the nickname, the Lilywhites. There’s a subtle but distinct linework pattern running through the new shirt that’s said to have been inspired by “the borough’s vibrant music scene and streetwear culture of the borough of Tottenham”
Even ahead of kick-off, the clash in West London was already incident-filled. The match itself was delayed by a few minutes due to the water supply at stadium being cut off.
The game eventually got underway whilst the problem was being resolved. A statement from Brentford read: “Please be aware that we are currently dealing with an issue in relation to the water supply into the stadium which is affecting all related facilities We will provide a further update in due course.”
