INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Dak Prescott was in good spirits Sunday afternoon. He was saying “preach” when Ezekiel Elliott was bashing critics of the Dallas Cowboys and he was praising his backup, Cooper Rush, for moving to 5-0 in his career as a starter.
Yet, at some point, Prescott will return as the starting quarterback from a fractured right thumb. Prescott said he can grip a football and hopes to start throwing this week in anticipation of the Week 6 game on Sunday night against the Eagles.
“I’m day-by-day,” Prescott said. “There’s a lot of growth right now, we’re uphill, things are happening fast, taking it day-by-day. When I can do more than the next day we’ll keep pushing like that.”
Prescott will see the team doctor on Tuesday to get further information on his thumb that was fractured in the loss to Tampa Bay on Sept. 11. There is no guarantee Prescott can even play against the Eagles, considering coach Mike McCarthy wants to see him practice for a full week.
The toughest part for Prescott is not so much missing the games but the preparation for them.
“The games are sometimes the easiest part to be honest with you,” he said. “Being able to see my brothers go out there and do what they love. I’m a selfless guy, yeah. At that point it’s exciting and I know that I can help them whether it’s telling them something in their ear or just getting the energy going right. I feel like I have a part.
“The week may be a little bit tougher. I know you want to be in there game planning and practicing and all that, but when you come out here, it’s game day. I know I have a job and that’s to support the (game-day roster of) 48 and that’s the best thing that I can do. And it’s exciting to see what these guys can do.”
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones agrees the noise that Rush remains the starter should subside whenever Prescott returns. Yet Jones believes when Rush plays well it only helps the Cowboys.
“Dak is the No. 1 quarterback,” Jones said. “Dak is our guy. But isn’t it great that somebody came in and played well enough so that we can ask that question? That’s my point.”
