Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy: I Won’t Participate in Drama Surrounding Packers Playoff Game

Mike McCarthy is set to have a nostalgia-filled week.

His Dallas Cowboys secured the NFC East Division title and the No. 2 seed in the NFC with a dominant 38-10 victory over the Washington Commanders. The reward is a matchup with the Green Bay Packers in the Divisional Round.

McCarthy notably served as the head coach of the Packers for 13 seasons, winning Super Bowl XLV with the team and sporting an overall record of 125-77 with the franchise.

He is not personally looking forward to the novelty of this matchup, however, saying the only thing that matters is that it is a playoff game.

“The drama of it I’m sure you guys will love. I will not participate in it,” McCarthy said, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. “It’s playoff time. It doesn’t matter who we play, to be honest with you.”

McCarthy’s run with the Packers ended in 2018 after a few tougher seasons but the top moments of his tenure were extremely notable for the franchise.

He oversaw the end of the Brett Farve era and the transition to Aaron Rodgers as well as the development of some franchise stars like Clay Matthews and Davante Adams.

The Packers team his Cowboys will face is not very reminiscent of his Packer teams, as Jordan Love will be under center and the roster as a whole is very young. Still, the history is there and it will certainly be a storyline to follow for the upcoming week.
