Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones recently appeared on the K&C Masterpiece on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM], where he discussed Dak Prescott’s ankle, Von Miller on the Bills and Tom Brady. Here are some highlights:
What can you tell us about Dak Prescott and his ankle?
Jerry Jones: “I think you see — you’ve heard it about as straight as you need to and accurately. I think he had some discomfort, but it was checked out thoroughly in every way that you can and no issues. Certainly could have returned, we got some really good on the spot testing and on the spot equipment that we can do out there, not only right there in our practice facility, but also steps away in our Baylor Medical Center. So, we were able to take a good look at it and got completely satisfied and he did, too, that there was nothing to it.”
Did you see Von Miller play in Week 1 and do you wish you added him to the Cowboys?
Jones: ““I like the makeup of our team. We did give that consideration. We gave a lot of consideration to really several opportunities in the offseason to zig and we decided to zag. We went in a different direction. I love our defense. What inspires me about last night is that we’ve, I think, got one of our best defenses and defensive personnels that we’ve had in a long time, and it shows defense is, to be trite, very incremental to having a good team.
“So, I like it. I think, look out, that’s what we could be: solid on defense. What we did in making some of the decision was we decided to go younger and we decided to go with more quantity and develop into the kinds of players that Von Miller is at this particular time. It’s a long season to get a Super Bowl. You play 23, 24 games to get to a Super Bowl.”
Do you share that same optimism in terms of the offense?
Jones: ““I think the offense is frankly — Dak is having his best, very best conditioning in my mind and best offseason and best training camp I’ve seen him have. Zeke [Elliott] is in the best shape I’ve ever seen him in. I really like our receiving corps and I know people say, ‘Well, but you dropped off there with not having [Amari] Cooper.’ Let’s see how that works. I like what we got. I like our tight ends. I like our tight ends a lot.
“We’re going to — we want to feature and want to stay on that ground a little more than we have in the past. We’ll see how that works out. Listen, we had room on offense to basically make these kinds of adjustments that we’re making. We’ve got some players out there that if given the chance can make the plays. I think it’s going to work.”
What would put the stamp on Prescott being an elite quarterback? Does that only come with winning?
Jones: ” “I think that ultimately is the one that seals it. Troy Aikman is a three-time winning Super Bowl quarterback — elite by any definition. Tony [Romo] didn’t get his Super Bowls. That’s as much my fault or the supporting cast. That’s probably the thing I regret the most. I’ve said it many times. But he didn’t get his Super Bowls. So, you have your issue there with that. Tony was an outstanding, outstanding winning quarterback and, in my mind, should have had a Super Bowl.
“So, that’s what it is. You can have great records, great percentage of records, you can have won some great games, but, boy, you need to win them, and only one team wins them each year, and that’s what makes this sport great.”
Is this the year Tom Brady is just not good enough anymore?
Jones: “I’m going to say I hope so. With all due respect, I’m excited about our opportunity to play against the Bucs and him here this Sunday night. But, no, we want to do something about that. By the way, get the ball out quick. He has a variety of receivers and a variety of ways that he wins ball games over the years. And, so, all of those things you got to admire.
“There’s a lot of me — and, of course, you get in trouble every time you ever make a comparison and I know that before I say this — but there is a lot of me that sees the excellence that Tom Brady is about, how hard and how much he focuses on the nuances of the game, I see those characteristics in Dak and I see the improvement.”
