Cowboys’ Jerry Jones Declines Comment on Mike McCarthy; ‘Floored’ by Packers Loss

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was understandably devastated after the team’s 48-32 upset loss to the Green Bay Packers in Sunday’s NFC Wild Card Game, but he didn’t indicate what it means for head coach Mike McCarthy.

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Jones declined to comment on McCarthy’s job status after the loss, but he did say he was “floored” by the result of the game.

“This seems like the most painful [playoff loss] because we all had such great expectation and we had hope for this team,” Jones told reporters after the game. “… It didn’t happen for us and it’s as fresh on me as it is on anybody else, but I won’t get into any of the addressing of any aspects of any part of it, from coaching to players to what’s around the corner.”

When asked about a potential meeting with McCarthy this week, Jones responded, “There’s nothing set on that. What I had planned to do was be with him tomorrow going over how we played today and getting ready for the coming week. That’s what was on the agenda. Tomorrow, my agenda will be to dismiss the team.”

The Cowboys suffered their first loss at home since the 2022 opener, and they did so in demoralizing fashion. The 48 points by the Packers were the most surrendered in a playoff game by the Cowboys in franchise history.

Per ESPN, Dallas is the first team ever to win 12 games in three consecutive playoff seasons and fail to make the conference championship game each time, all under McCarthy’s watch. The Cowboys have not made it to an NFC title game since their last Super Bowl win in 1995.

There’s no denying that McCarthy is a dependable NFL head coach, but he just hasn’t been able to get Dallas over the hump in three years at the helm. With a slew of big names on the coaching market like Bill Belichick and Jim Harbaugh, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Jones explores his options this offseason.
