EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Let the countdown begin for the return of Dak Prescott.

Well, the official return.

The Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback had “one long stitch” removed from his fractured right thumb on Monday at MetLife Stadium, according to ESPN’s Lisa Salters. Cowboys officials have said once Prescott had the stitch removed it could ramp up his return.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said when Prescott is able to grip a football without any apparent issues, he would be ready to play.

Before the Cowboys-Giants game on Monday night, Jones wouldn’t say if Prescott could return for the Los Angeles Rams game on Oct. 9, but Jones did say Prescott feels great.

Prescott suffered the injury in the season opener and team officials said it would be a four- to six-week recovery.

Yet, Jones has said he was optimistic Prescott could return within the four-week timeframe, which initially seemed unlikely.

A more realistic return for Prescott would be Oct. 16 at Philadelphia.
