Coroner identifies Vernon food plant workers killed by nitrogen leak

VERNON — Authorities identified a man and woman Friday who died at a hospital after losing consciousness at a Vernon food processing plant following an apparent liquid nitrogen leak.

Crews were dispatched shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday to the plant at 4401 S. Downey Ave., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Baldemar Lopez, 56, of Los Angeles, and Ma Esther Osyguss, 49, of Hemet died at a hospital, according to the coroner’s office. It was not immediately disclosed if they were employees of the business.

Autopsies were pending to determine their causes of death.

Vernon and Los Angeles County hazmat teams were sent to the scene, and Cal-OSHA was notified.

Golden West Food Group is the company operating at the location.
