Coronation Street aired a heartbreaking death tonight (March 22), as Evelyn Plummer’s dog Cerberus died.
The latest episode opened with Cerberus unwell after throwing up all night. After some convincing from Tyrone Dobbs, Evelyn took Cerberus to the vet. The vet kept Cerberus in for tests and wondered if the dog had eaten something that would have set him off.
In the café, Evelyn explained the situation to Roy Cropper, who cleared things up by revealing that an Eccles cake had fallen on the floor the day before and Cerberus had eaten it. As Evelyn received a call to go back to the vet, she told Roy that if anything bad happened, she would never forgive him.

Although Evelyn was confident things would be fine, the vet told her that Cerberus’s kidneys had failed and it was unlikely he would improve, suggesting that it would be best to have the dog put down.
She eventually agreed and was in tears as the injection was administered.
“In sickness and in health, unconditional love and unquestionable loyalty,” she said as she stroked him.
“Thank you for being such a good boy. Best boy, my friend. Just sleep, my little angel. You are the Prince of Weatherfield.”

Back on the street, Roy approached Evelyn to reiterate how sorry he was. But true to her word, Evelyn told him she held him responsible and, just like her dog, their friendship was dead.
Will Roy ever make amends? Normally we’d say yes, but a) losing a pet hurts like nothing else, and b) Evelyn isn’t one to forgive so easily.
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
