Mexico has won more Gold Cups than any other team, but Honduras will try to deny its bid to repeat when the teams meet Saturday in the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup quarterfinals in Arlington, Texas. The teams faced off in a friendly on June 12 that ended in a scoreless draw, and the United States knocked off both in the Concacaf Nations League finals at the beginning of last month. Honduras lost 1-0 in the semifinals before beating Costa Rica in the third-place game, and Mexico has its eye on avenging its 3-2 loss to the USA in the championship game. Mexico did not allow a goal in the group stage, while Honduras scored seven in its three games.

Kickoff from AT&T Stadium is scheduled for 10 p.m ET. Mexico is the -250 favorite (risk $250 to win $100) on the 90-minute money line in William Hill Sportsbook’s latest Mexico vs. Honduras odds. Honduras is the +700 underdog, and the over-under for total goals scored is 2.5. El Tri is slightly favored to win the tournament, with William Hill listing it at +150, just ahead of the United States (+175). Mexico will be determined to move closer to a rematch with the USA and a shot at a 12th Concacaf title. It has not been beaten or conceded a goal since the loss to the USA, going 4-2-0, and faces a Honduras team facing major injury woes. Striker Alberth Elis is out with a broken toe, while key cog Romell Quioto and defensive lynchpin Maynor Garcia left Tuesday’s game, so 34-year-old striker Jerry Bengtson could be the biggest offensive threat.

Mexico is solid from front to back, with Edson Alvarez, Hector Herrera and Erick Gutierrez forming a creative midfield and Jesus Corona, Orbelin Pineda and Rogelio Funes Mori a dangerous attacking triumvirate. Funes Mori scored twice against Guatemala and is picking up the slack with top striker Hirving Lozano out. Funes Mori had 15 goals with Monterrey in Liga MX last season and recently gained citizenship. Honduras has been held off the score sheet in seven of the past eight meetings, with Mexico going 4-3-1 in that span and 24-10-8 all-time.

    Why you should back Honduras

The Catrachos have established themselves as one of the heavyweights in Concacaf behind the USA and Mexico, and they come in with confidence. They don’t have a great record against Mexico, but they won 3-2 in the last tournament matchup, a 2017 World Cup qualifier. That was the most recent meeting before last month’s friendly. Mexico also has been dealing with a big loss, as star striker Hirving Lozano was injured in the opener. El Tri has struggled to score without him, and its four group-stage goals were the fewest among teams that advanced.

The team is hoping offensive engine Romell Quioto and stalwart defender Maynor Garcia, the nation’s all-time leader with 169 appearances, will be ready to go by Saturday. Jerry Bengston will be the offensive catalyst with Elis out, and he is No. 7 on the nation’s all-time scoring list with 22 goals. Boniek Garcia has 131 caps and can provide the leadership if Maynor Garcia can’t go.
