A BBC commentator was forced to apologise to his listeners after mis-hearing chants aimed at Antony over the weekend.

The Radio Wales Sport host, Rob Phillips, was commentating on Newport County’s FA Cup clash with Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, a clash that the Red Devils won 4-2.

Among Erik ten Hag’s top performers on the day was Brazilian star Antony who scored his first goal of the season to put United 3-2 up midway through the second half.

As a result of his efforts, Antony attracted attention from the home supporters who aimed chants at the winger, with reference to the domestic abuse allegations that have impacted him in recent months.

Antony vehemently denies the allegations, but that didn’t stop the Newport fans from taking aim him with abusive chants, even if the BBC commentator thought they were singing something much more complimentary.

Antony’s the greatest, is the latest chant from the-” the broadcaster began, before quickly realising the true lyrics of what was being sung.

His co-commentator even let out a groan, before Phillips tried to correct himself by saying: “Oh no, it’s not greatest.”

“Sorry. Apologies if you understand that.”

You have to feel sorry for the poor commentator’s inability to hear what was being said, but there’s no doubt that it is a moment that he’ll be keen to forget.

But while his blunder was accidental, Guy Mowbray aimed a quip at Antony which was fully intentional.

During his own commentary, Mowbray said: “If Antony got on a bike he’d just cycle around in circles wouldn’t he?

“Because his left leg is brilliant and his right leg is practically not there.”

While it was a rough day on the airwaves for Antony, he’ll no doubt be hoping to kickstart his season after netting for the first time this campaign.
