A new poll shows Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is the most well-liked justice on the nation’s highest court, while Chief Justice John Roberts scores favorably with Democrats despite being nominated by President George W. Bush.

According to the results of a YouGov poll released Wednesday, Thomas checks in with the best favorable rating among Republicans at 59%. Only 11% of Republicans expressed an unfavorable view of Thomas, while 29% said they weren’t sure.

On the other hand, Roberts was viewed favorably by only 27% of Republicans, with 35% saying they had an unfavorable view of the chief justice. Despite being nominated by a Republican, Roberts actually scored a higher favorable rating among Democrats, with 39% expressing a favorable view of him compared to 24% who viewed him unfavorably.

“Chief Justice Roberts is the sole case of a Justice faring worse with those from the party of the president who nominated them than with those in the opposition party,” YouGov said of the poll results. “In the last few years, Roberts, who was appointed by President George W. Bush, has cast the deciding vote in a number of cases, occasionally disagreeing with the Court’s conservatives. The most notable example was his vote to uphold the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare).”

Justice Sonia Sotomayor checked in as the most favorable justice among Democrats, with 63% viewing her favorably and only 9% unfavorably.

The most popular justices in each party were almost equally disliked by the opposing party. Thomas is only viewed favorably by 21% of Democrats, compared to 53% who view him unfavorably. Sotomayor is viewed the most unfavorably of any justice among Republicans, with only 13% expressing a favorable view of the justice and 49% expressing an unfavorable view.

The court overall is viewed more favorably by Democrats despite former President Donald Trump putting three new justices on the bench during his four-year term, significantly shifting the balance of the court. But 48% of Democrats approve of the way the Supreme Court is handling its job, while 34% disapprove. Only 39% of Republicans approve of the way the Supreme Court is handling its job, compared to 41% who disapprove.

“Republicans — 74% of whom do not believe Joe Biden legitimately won the 2020 election — may be disappointed that the Supreme Court refused to rule against Biden’s victory in multiple suits brought by the Trump campaign,” YouGov said of the court’s overall popularity.
