Clarence and Ginni Thomas targeted after Supreme Court decision by Colorado official who barred Trump from ballot

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold expressed her displeasure at the unanimous Supreme Court ruling that former President Donald Trump cannot be removed from state primary ballots.

Appearing on MSNBC shortly after the ruling, Griswold, whose decision to remove Trump from the state ballot began the national legal battle, focused on Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife, Ginni Thomas, even though the ruling was unanimous.

“I think this court has had obviously some pretty big issues, whether it has been … Clarence Thomas’s wife’s role, gifts that have gone unreported, and there are some pretty big decisions that have come out of the court that I highly disagree with, and I think strip Americans of our basic human rights and fundamental freedoms,” Griswold said.

The Colorado Democrat also claimed that she was trying to save democracy, a feat she said is now up to voters in November.

“My larger reaction is disappointment. I do believe that states should be able, under our Constitution, to bar oath-breaking insurrectionists,” she said, “and ultimately, this decision leaves open, or leaves open the door for Congress to act to pass authorizing legislation, but we know that Congress is a nearly nonfunctioning body, so ultimately, it will be up to the American voters to save our democracy in November.”

Still, Griswold maintained that she was “glad” a ruling was made to give voters “clarity” before Super Tuesday.

Though the three liberal Supreme Court justices ruled in favor of Trump remaining on state ballots, they criticized part of the majority opinion, saying they “protest the majority’s effort to use this case to define the limits of federal enforcement” of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.
