CityNews’ Cynthia Mulligan reveals her renewed battle with breast cancer

Veteran CityNews reporter Cynthia Mulligan took to Twitter Tuesday to share the difficult news that her breast cancer has returned.

“It’s easier because I have done this before. It’s harder because I have done this before. But I have hope,” said Mulligan, whose years on Toronto television stretch back to the 1990s, in a series of tweets shared Tuesday.

Mulligan’s cancer battle began 11 years ago. During months of treatment, Mulligan spread awareness through her blog, Kicking Cancer, on CityNews’s website, and the struggle seemed to end in triumph.

However, Mulligan says she was rediagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer two days before Christmas last December. She says she’s been part of a drug trial for targeted chemotherapy since February and “The side effects are tough but … it’s worth it. I had a CT scan and the treatment is working!! The cancer is not progressing and in fact it has shrunk by 30%, so don’t count me out.”

She announced that after June 30, she will be taking the summer off to focus on herself. “Cancer puts life in perspective,” she shared in her tweets, and hopes to spend as much time as possible with her two daughters and her partner Stef. (Her personal life has become the stuff of news before, after her ex-boyfriend, comedian Mike Bullard, pleaded guilty to harassing phone calls in 2018.)

“All I ask is that when you see me don’t see someone who is sick. See someone who is loving every second of this glorious thing we call life. I’m not living with cancer, it’s just hitching a ride on my amazing life.” said Mulligan.
