Cincinnati Bengals, Jessie Bates unlikely to come to contract agreement

Bates #Bates

The Cincinnati Bengals and safety Jessie Bates face a deadline at 4 p.m. on Friday to agree on a new contract. Otherwise, the star safety will have to play the 2022 season under the franchise tag. The Bengals placed Bates on the franchise tag back on March 7, the announcement came a day before the deadline for clubs to designate franchise or transition players. “Jessie has been an important part of this organization both on the field and in the locker room,” Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said in a statement. “I’m excited about the opportunity for Jessie to be with us again this year as we continue to improve our team.”The 25-year-old safety was drafted by the Bengals in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft. The franchise tag is a designation that NFL teams can apply to one of their upcoming unrestricted free agents yearly.According to NFL’s Ian Rapoport’s Twitter, the Bengals’ final offer guaranteed Bates only $4 million more than what he would get if he eventually signs the franchise tag. The big difference is the tag will lock Bates in for one year, while the Bengal’s offer locks him in for five additional years. “Jessie has been an outstanding player here for four years,” Bengals executive vice president Katie Blackburn said in a statement back in March. “Over the past year, we’ve tried to extend his contract here in Cincinnati, and while that hasn’t come to pass, we want him here for 2022 to be a part of what we think should be an exciting football season and bright future for our organization.” NFL’s Josina Anderson also reported that he was told “Jessie Bates has no intentions of reporting to training camp, nor playing on the franchise tag, per league source. The two sides are currently unable to come to terms on an extension on today’s deadline for long-term deals for players designated with the tag.”Using the franchise tag allows the team to prevent that player from hitting free agency in the new league year.Only one player can be designated with the franchise tag.So far, the Bengals nor Bates have made any comments on the deal.
