Ciaron Maher expressed frustration and bewilderment at Craig Williams’ tactics aboard the heavily backed Jimmysstar, who succumbed to an upset defeat by $151 outsider Makram at Flemington.

Maher lambasted Williams’ deviation from the race plan, asserting, “Craig just had an absolute brain fade.”

“I don’t know why he did that. That was not the plan. It has never been discussed.”

“It (plan) was ride comfortable wherever he lands back in the field, like he does every start.”

“A very, very poor ride. Just stupid.”

“I don’t know why he would do that and that’s all I can say. He’s ridden the horse before.”

The plan was for Jimmysstar to settle comfortably in the field, not lead, as he had done in previous starts. Williams’ decision to push forward from barrier 10 defied expectations, leaving the hot favourite vulnerable in unfamiliar territory.

Part-owner John O’Neill echoed Maher’s sentiments, expressing surprise at Jimmysstar’s uncharacteristic front-running position. Williams, acknowledging his error, later apologized, admitting he “made a blue with the ride.”

This incident marks the second time this season Williams has faced criticism for his handling of a favourite in a stakes race.

Despite the setback, Jimmysstar’s connections remain focused on future targets, including a potential wildcard entry into the All Star Mile and a Doncaster Handicap tilt.

Meanwhile, Ben Hayes praised Makram’s victory, highlighting the horse’s latent talent and suggesting a resurgence in form for the promising European import this autumn.
