Christmas 2020: Where to get takeout for Christmas Day in Alabama

Much like Thanksgiving, Christmas won’t be the same this year as the pandemic forces us to restrict our gathering and travel plans. Looking to take a break from cooking? Restaurants in Alabama are offering Christmas fare to go. Here’s where you can get takeout orders of meats, dressing, side dishes, dessert and more.

BIRMINGHAM

SATTERFIELD’S 3161 Cahaba Heights Rd, Birmingham (205) 969-9690

On the menu: Satterfield’s has three options for holiday meals: A holiday feast for $120 ( 3 lbs. glazed ham, 1 pan corn pudding, 1 pan gratin, 1 qt. collards, 1/2 dozen yeast rolls, 1 pan salad, and 1 pan trifle.) The a la carte option serves four ( carved glazed ham, $18/ lbs.; corn pudding $12/ pan; truffled potato gratin, $20/ pan; braised collards with bacon, $12/qt.; shaved brussels sprouts salad with cranberries, pecans, goat cheese, poppyseed vinaigrette, $15/pan; yeast rolls, $8 for 1/2 dozen; gingerbread trifle, $18 per pan. The restaurant is also offering a selection of appetizers (cheese platter, $35; meat & cheese platter, $45, deviled eggs $10 for a dozen halves; poppers, $12 for 10).

On the menu: Bandit’s online store is offering a collection of sweet and savory pies, tarts, and breads for the Christmas holiday including: Pumpkin Meringue Pie, $32; Brown Butter Apple Pie – $32; Bourbon Pecan Pie – $32; *The* Carrot Cake – $60; Chocolate Peanut Butter Tartlets – $6; Classic Croissant Box // Half Dozen – $24; Holiday Cookie Box – $20; Ham and Cheese Quiche – $24; Turkey Pot Pie – $35; Sweet Potato Quiche – $24; Sourdough Bread – $7; Parker House Dinner Rolls – $6; Cranberry Walnut Sourdough – $8

On the menu: Meal packages include single smoked, herbed pork tenderloin (feeds 4) $20; single smoked beef herbed tenderloin (feeds 8-10); two roasted herbed turkey tenderloins (feeds 4-5) $24, 1/2 chicken (feeds 2 to 3) $11; 12 wings (southern fried, sweet & hot, or sweet & hot lemon pepper), $20.| Salads: Baby Bleu or Waldorf Salad, $25 for a three- quart pan and $12 for a one-quart pan.| Desserts: Pecan, sweet potato, or brownie bites, $18| Extras: deviled eggs, gravy, orange cranberry sauce, sweet balsamic glaze, $8.

On the menu: This year, Martin’s is offering holiday meals in a family dinner size to feed 4-6 people ($99) and a larger gathering size to feed 12-15 people ($184.99): smoked ham or smoked turkey, dinner rolls, sweet potato casserole, broccoli salad, turnip greens, mashed potatoes, pie (pecan, fudge, or sweet potato), choice of sauce. On the menu: Rodney Scott is bringing back his special whole, smoked turkeys for Christmas: a whole bird (spatchcocked, pit-smoked).

EUGENE’S HOT CHICKEN

On the menu: Eugene’s is bringing back its popular fried turkeys for Christmas–$55 for a whole bird.

Deadline to order: Eugene’s recommends ordering as soon as possible since supplies are limited. with pickup available Wednesday, Dec. 23, and Thursday, Dec. 24. To order, patrons should call 205-322-7555 or 205-593-4695. Pickup information will be given over the phone.

HIGHLANDS BAR & GRILL 2011 11th Ave S, Birmingham, (205) 939-1400

On the menu: Highlands Bars and Grill is offering pickup holiday dinners for Christmas (and a week later for New Year’s Eve.) The Christmas dinner for two is $150 and includes a first course for each person, an entrée and dessert. There is also an a la carte menu with a choice of caviar service, shrimp cocktail, and cheese service.

Deadline to order: Highlands is accepting orders for Christmas Dinner until Friday, December 18 at 6:00 p.m. or until sold out. Pick-up is Wednesday, December 23 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. The restaurant is asking patrons to email orders and provide phone numbers to info@highlandsbarandgrill.com. The restaurant will confirm within 24 hours.

CAJUN CLEAVER 2341 John Hawkins Parkway, Suite 101, 205-444-0496.

On the menu: Holiday meal packages come with a choice of fried turkey, smoked turkey or ham, with two sides (choice of mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green beans, broccoli cheese casserole, smothered corn, squash casserole), cornbread sausage dressing, quart of gravy, pumpkin bread pudding, pan of yeast rolls, feeds 10-12 people, $145.

Also: Fried or smoked turkey, $59; smoked ham, $55, sweet potato pie, $18.99; cornbread and sausage dressing, $9.99-$39; crawfish dressing, $9.99-$39.

Deadline to order: Fried turkeys are limited, so Cajun Cleaver suggests ordering as soon as possible before supplies run out. Orders for turkeys and Christmas meals must be placed online by Saturday, Dec. 19 at 7:00 p.m.

RED SEA ETHIOPIAN & MEDITERRANEAN RESTAURANT, 22 Green Springs Highway, 205-848-5154.

On the menu: Red Sea is bringing back its Thanksgiving Special: Fried turkey $60, turkey and dressing, $75. Sides are a la carte: mac and cheese $30, green beans $30.

Deadline to order: Order by phone. Red Sea recommends ordering a few days in advance.

HELEN 2013 Second Ave. North, 205-438-7000.

On the menu: Helen has created menus of prime meats and seasonal Southern sides for both Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Priced at $65 per person, the menus include: smoked Prime Rib, twice baked potatoes, braised button mushrooms, BBQ Green Beans, chopped kale salad, horseradish sauce, and angel biscuits.

Deadline to order: Orders can be placed via phone at (205) 438-7000. The restaurant suggests ordering as early as possible due to limited availability. Orders for Christmas are available for pick-up on either December 23.

NEWKS EATERY (All locations)

On the menu: As part of its seasonal chili lineup, Newk’s Eatery is offering its limited Frito Pie as an addition to Christmas Dinner. The bowl of Newcomb Family Recipe Chili, which serves four, comes with Frito corn chips, shredded Cheddar cheese, jalapeños, fresh cilantro and sour cream for $9.99.

Also on the list of chili offerings: Fully Loaded Newcomb Family Recipe Chili, taco salad, and Chili Mac and Cheese: Newk’s famous Five-Cheese Mac & Cheese and Newcomb Family Recipe Chili, sprinkled with a generous helping of roasted jalapeños, shredded cheddar cheese and cilantro.

Deadline to order: Order by December 23 at 6 p.m. Pick up by December 24 at 12 p.m. Patrons can order online or with the Newk’s Eatery mobile app.

GIUSEPPE’S CAFE 925 8th St S, Birmingham 35205, 205-324-2626

On the menu: For the holidays Giuseppe’s is assembling bake at home meals of lasagna, manicotti, or baked ziti, along with homemade garlic bread and salad– $40 for an order that feeds four, $55 for an order that feeds 6, and $70 for an order that feeds eight.

Deadline to order:

Customers must place orders via phone at 205-324-2626 by the end of Monday, December 21. Giuseppe’s notes that they only accept orders in person and will not record orders left on the restaurant answering machine.

MOBILE

MORRISON’S CAFETERIA 3200 Springdale Plaza Mobile 36606

On the menu: Morrison’s Cafeteria is offering full or jr. turkey or ham feasts for the holidays. Full feasts. Full feasts are $69.99 and junior feasts are $34.99. Turkey feasts come with cornbread dressing and turkey gravy. Ham feasts come with rolls and a choice of two sides.

HUNTSVILLE

MASON DIXON 2358 Whitesburg Drive S., 256-213-7545.

On the menu: Mason Dixon’s Christmas Menu includes a full $130 Christmas Dinner Special portioned to feed six people, including entrees and sides: roasted pork loin with balsamic cranberry glaze, $50. Sides include smoked Mac & Cheese $50. Mason Dixon is also offering a $55 Christmas dinner for two. Also on the menu: a selection of breakfast items and desserts.

TUSCALOOSA

On the menu: River’s takeout holiday meal menu includes one protein, three sides, one dessert and rolls for $100 and serves 4-6: Black Angus Beef Roast (additional $10) Brown Sugar bourbon Baked Ham, Citrus Herb Baked Salmon Filet

Sides: Mashed potatoes and gravy, farm salad, gouda macaroni and cheese, sautéed green beans, glazed carrots, devilled eggs, vegetable casserole, English pea salad, cornbread dressing, sweet potato casserole. Dessert: Pecan pie, banana pudding, dozen chocolate chip cookies.
