Nintendo and Illumination released the first teaser trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and for better or for worse, it has been drawing about a variety of opinions. There are many who are stoked for the release of this film, happy to see a Super Mario movie that more closely resembles the source material. Some have criticized the new voice Mario has with voice actor Chris Pratt in the role, though others have embraced it, along with that of Jack Black’s King Bowser.
Then there are other fans who aren’t bothered by Mario’s voice so much as his look. While he looks very similar to his video game counterpart, a few subtle differences to his face have been made for his transition to the big screen. Some on social media are saying that Mario’s look is giving them Fix-It Felix vibes, referring to the video game hero from Wreck-It Ralph and Ralph Breaks the Internet.
“Mario is just hairy Fix-it Felix,” one tweet reads.
“Looked to me like Fix-it Felix (from Wreck-It Ralph) wearing a Mario costume,” says someone else.
Another tweeter simply asks, “Okay but why does ‘Mario’ look like Fix-it Felix Jr. in the new trailer?”

Some fans are pointing out that Fix-It Felix was inspired by Mario in the first place, so there shouldn’t be much surprise if there are some similarities with the characters. Though Fix-It Felix is from a fictional video game, he was certainly inspired by early video game versions of Mario.
“Something I find weird is that most people don’t know Mario isn’t originally from the Mushroom Kingdom or that he has some resemblance to Fix-it Felix when Mario was an inspiration for that character,” writes one person online. “I’m not super huge into Mario, but I thought these were common knowledge.”
But for others, the new Mario still feels a bit too much like the Wreck-It Ralph character, despite the inspiration. One tweet states, “Fix it Felix was inspired from the original Mario and this Mario was inspired from fix it Felix.”
And none of this is to say that some fans who see the resemblance aren’t still excited for the film. As another tweeter puts it, “I actually love Him! His face vaugly reminds me of fix-it-felix’s cuteness? Which is great since they’re both handymen. He still looks like Mario (thats more then we could say for the first sonic design), just with a touch more realism, really its just so stinkin’ CUTE.”
