Chris Christie calls Trump’s legal team ‘a national embarrassment’

Chris Christie did not hold back in criticizing President Donald Trump’s legal team’s claims of voter fraud Sunday morning, calling their conduct “a national embarrassment.”

The former New Jersey governor appeared on a panel during “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos on Sunday, when the host asked if it’s time for Trump to stop challenging the 2020 election results.

“Yes,” Christie replied. “The president has had an opportunity to access the courts, if you’ve got the evidence of fraud presented. And what’s happened here is, quite frankly, the conduct of the president’s legal team has been a national embarrassment.”

Christie singled out Trump attorney Sydney Powell for accusing Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp of a crime on television while being unwilling to lay out the evidence that she supposedly has.

“This is outrageous conduct by any lawyer,” Christie added.

“And notice, George, they won’t do it inside the courtroom,” he told Stephanopoulos. “They allege fraud outside the courtroom, but when they go inside the coatroom, they don’t plead fraud and they don’t argue fraud.”

Christie reiterated his support for Trump during each of the last two elections, but emphasized the country comes first.

“I’ve been a supporter of the president’s. I voted for him twice,” he said. “But elections have consequences, and we cannot continue to act as if something happened here that didn’t happen. You have an obligation to present the evidence. The evidence has not been presented.

He also said an unwillingness to present the evidence :must mean the evidence doesn’t exist.”

“That’s what I was concerned about starting on election night. The country is what has to matter the most. As much as I’m a strong Republican, and I love my party, it’s the country that has to come first.”
