Chimamanda disclosed that she had a small wedding, and a part of the reason was that she wanted privacy.

Before her big day, the writer stated that she decided that both her parents would walk her down the aisle.

According to Chimamanda, she decided to get on the dance floor and have the first dance with her mother, contrary to what most expect, the dad to have the first dance with the bride on her wedding day.

Noting the support of her dad, the award-winning author said everything went according to plan as she also shared wedding photos as proof.

Urging people to challenge conventions, Chimamanda said they are made by someone and repeated by others.

According to her, the inspiration behind what she did on her wedding day was that western wedding traditions sidelined the bride’s mother.

She noted that the man walks the bride down the aisle, the man has the first dance with the bride, and often gives a speech while the mother does nothing.

Chimamanda wrote:

“We can unmake convention to make things more just, more complete, more beautiful.”

As expected, there were mixed reactions to her post.

Here are some of the comments:

@Ella Umeh-Ezeadilieje said:

“Very true. If that convention eats your craw, if it feels funny to you, please stop, question, and do your thing the way you want. The world will be alright.”

@Chukwuma Odo commented:

“A father walking the daughters down the aisle is nothing compared to what mothers gain from their son-in-laws and their daughters. Generally, mothers benefit more from their children than fathers.”

@Vashti Godwin added:

“True, hanks for bringing this to light. As an only child my parents deserve to walk me down the aisle, no matter how weird it may look to some people I don’t care.”

@Chidinma Alphonsus said:

“For me, my father is walking me down the aisle.I have been to many church weddings and from my own observation and understanding, I think it’s best for the father of the bride to do so based on what it signifies for me (this is my own opinion).”

In similar Chimamanda news, TUKO.co.ke covered the writer mourning her mother after news hit that she had passed on.

The We Should All Be Feminist author said that her mom’s death broke her heart twice and stated that the family was planning a ceremony to mark the end of mourning her father when her mom died.

Chimamanda revealed that she was in disbelief that the family was planning yet another funeral.
