Disney has come under fire following their decision to ban under-7s from watching certain programmes on their streaming platform, Disney+. Disney+ claimed that Peter Pan, Dumbo and the Aristocats portrayed negative stereotypes as reasoning from removing the films from the children section. Disney also implemented a revised content advisory in October over issues surrounding racial stereotypes.

These concerns in relation to Dumbo, Lady and the Tramp. The Jungle Book, Peter Pan and the Aristocrats.

Jeremy Vine guest and commentator Nana Akua questioned this was the right decision by Disney.

She argued, from a child’s perspective, they would not view these films as offensive or see the stereotypes.

She said: “This is some of the older Disney cartoons like Dumbo and Peter Pan.

“Disney has decided that some of the things in them are a little bit offensive now and would be classed as racist.

“So they blocked under-7s from watching these things because they say it sort of stereotypes people.”

Ms Akua admitted her opinion was divided on this issue but argued Disney may have been over-cautious in its decision.

She continued: “I do not know how I feel about this, I think this has been viewed from the lens of an adult.

“So when the adult views this they think ‘oh that is racist’ but when a kid views this they just see Dumbo.

“It may reinforce stereotypes but I don’t think the child’s brain is thinking in that way.

“There is an argument that perhaps you look back at things and think this is unacceptable but I think if you view it from the lens of a child, in the child’s mind it doesn’t see those prejudices and stereotypes.”

Regarding old cartoons to which Disney has deemed offensive, it has added a warning to children and parents before it begins.

It reads: “This programme includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures.

“These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now.

“We want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together”
