The Colorado Rapids have completed a deal to sign U.S. national team left back Sam Vines from Royal Antwerp, the club announced on Monday.
In a corresponding move, the Rapids are finalizing a deal to send left back Miguel Navarro on loan to Argentine side Talleres, sources briefed on the deal say. The deal will include a purchase option.
Navarro was acquired in a trade this offseason that sent Andrew Gutman to the Chicago Fire. The Rapids had planned to begin the season with Navarro as their starting left back, but the club switched gears once a deal for Vines became possible.
The club and Navarro’s camp had open communication about the deals and the Rapids wanted to let Navarro go somewhere that he could be the starter ahead of his expected involvement with Venezuela at the Copa America this summer.
Vines, 24, broke through with the Rapids before being transferred to Antwerp in 2021. Playing time has been difficult to come by this year for Vines and now he returns to Colorado where he’ll be the first choice left back.
