Chesterfield’s goalkeeper was barged to the ground by a pitch-invading fan after Oldham scored a last-minute equaliser in their National League clash on Saturday.

It appeared as though Chesterfield would maintain their perfect start to the season when Ash Palmer headed home from a corner on the hour mark.

But Oldham netted a stoppage-time equaliser through James Norwood to pick up their fourth point of the campaign and deny Chesterfield a fourth straight win.

Oldham’s late goal prompted some unsavoury scenes as several fans in the away end invaded the pitch to celebrate, with one shoving Chesterfield goalkeeper Harry Tyrer to the ground.

Chesterfield manager Paul Cook was ‘disappointed’ by the scenes and said player safety is ‘absolutely paramount’ to the game.

‘That can’t go on. When fans come on the pitch, we’ve got to protect the players,’ the 56-year-old told TNT Sports.

‘Oldham have got fantastic supporters and you can understand the euphoria of getting a result late on away from home. But player safety is paramount.

‘Our goalkeeper has had an altercation which isn’t healthy for the game. Player safety – on both teams, by the way – is absolutely paramount so I was disappointed by how the game ended from that point of view.

‘It’s just not good, is it? We understand the excitement from fans, I get that. They support the club so loyally and it’s great for them to equalise.

‘But player safety is massive in the game and I would feel exactly the same if it happened to them.’
