Cheltenham Town striker Alfie May will miss most of pre-season after undergoing a minor groin operation.
It is hoped last season’s Player of the Year will be back for the final friendly against Northampton Town, a week before the 2022/23 campaign kicks off on July 30.
There is a chance he could play some part in the Birmingham City match on July 19.
May, who turns 29 on Saturday, was carrying a niggling injury last term, when he scored 26 goals in league and cup.
The surgery has been a success and the issue has been resolved, but it will keep him out for three to four weeks of pre-season.
There has been interest in May from several clubs this summer, but Cheltenham are yet to receive any formal bids.
He joined for £5,000 from Doncaster Rovers in January 2020 and during a memorable 2021/22 season, equalled the club record for goals in an EFL campaign – 23 – set by Mo Eisa in 2017/18.
May is also only one goal behind Julian Alsop’s club EFL scoring record of 39.
The former Doncaster Rovers forward turned down a move to San Diego Loyal in January and signed a new two-and-a-half year contract with the Robins, finishing the season with a run of 16 goals in 18 games. He scored four goals in a 5-5 draw at Wycombe Wanderers in February.
May was Cheltenham’s top scorer during the 2020/21 title-winning campaign with 13 in all competitions, including one against Manchester City in the FA Cup, which put the Robins ahead for 22 minutes before three late goals took Pep Guardiola’s team into round five.
